In a digital disruption that caught millions off guard, YouTube suffered a sudden global outage on Wednesday, videos failed to load, apps froze mid-scroll, and error messages took over screens worldwide.

Downdetector indicates that more than 800,000 users experienced issues not just with YouTube, but also with associated streaming services like YouTube Music and YouTube TV, implying that the outage was extensive.

YouTube, the largest video platform owned by Google, quickly addressed the situation shortly after the disruption started. In a concise update on its status page, the company acknowledged the global playback problems impacting users and confirmed that it was actively addressing the issue.

On mobile devices, the YouTube app displayed the message "Something went wrong." This problem wasn't confined to videos alone. Streaming on YouTube Music also stopped, although users were still able to play their offline downloads.

Millions Affected by Sudden YouTube Crash

The disruption started subtly on Wednesday night but rapidly escalated into worldwide turmoil. By approximately 7 pm ET (4:30 am IST Thursday), users globally encountered an exasperating notification on their screens: "An error occurred. Please try again later."

As reported by Downdetector, the service disruption affected users across the United States, Australia, Canada, Europe, and the UK, spreading more rapidly than most popular videos on the platform. The data revealed a significant increase in complaints, with over 800,000 directed at YouTube, while YouTube Music and YouTube TV recorded thousands more.

In the United States, over 366,000 users had reported problems by 7:55 pm ET (5:25 am IST Thursday). In India, approximately 63 percent of users experienced difficulties playing videos, frequently seeing messages like 'Playback error' or 'An error occurred.' Around 30 percent encountered issues particularly with the mobile application.
