Announcing the rollout in a blog post, the company said: “Today, we’ll begin expanding our Premium Lite pilot to users in India. Premium Lite gives viewers a new, more affordable way to enjoy most videos on YouTube ad-free.”

The launch signals YouTube’s effort to cater to price-sensitive markets like India, offering a flexible subscription model that meets users' core needs without the full suite of premium features. This expansion comes as YouTube Music and Premium reaches over 125 million subscribers, including trials globally, it added.

YouTube Premium Lite vs YouTube Premium

Unlike the full YouTube Premium, which includes background play, offline downloads, and access to YouTube Music, Premium Lite focuses solely on removing ads from most videos across mobile, desktop, smart TVs, and other supported devices.

YouTube Premium Lite is compatible with various devices such as phones, laptops, and TVs. According to Google, although Premium Lite provides an ad-free experience for most videos, advertisements might still be present in music content, Shorts, and during searches or browsing.

As previously stated, it is a cost-effective alternative to YouTube Premium. The original is available for Rs 89 monthly, whereas YouTube Premium Lite is priced at Rs 149 per month.

YouTube Premium Lite does not include access to YouTube Music, nor does it offer features such as downloading and background play, which are available with YouTube Music.
