Myths and Facts About Heart Bypass Surgery: We frequently hear that someone had a heart attack and had to undergo bypass surgery. But what is the real reason behind this? And what is bypass? Let’s understand all this in simple language.
What exactly is CAD?
Coronary artery disease (CAD) is a condition in which fatty deposits build up in the main blood vessels that supply blood to your heart. This blocks blood flow and prevents your heart from working properly. This can lead to chest pain (angina) or a heart attack.
Who can get this disease?
Increasing age, a family history of heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, smoking, obesity, high cholesterol, and lack of exercise all increase the risk of CAD.
What is the treatment?
If someone has a heart attack and it is obstructing blood flow, there are two main ways to retore blood supply.
1.Angioplasty – A small balloon is used to open up a blocked blood vessel.
2.Bypass surgery (CABG) – A new passageway is created using a vein or artery from the patient’s own body, so that blood can bypass the blockage and reach the heart.
Common misconceptions and facts about CABG
Myth: Every blockage requires a bypass.
Fact: A cardiologist and surgeon together decide whether a bypass is necessary. Not every blockage requires a bypass.
Myth: This surgery is only for the elderly.
Fact: Nowadays, CAD is also occurring in people aged 35-60. In India, the age of patients is younger than in Western countries.
Myth: Surgery is very painful.
Fact: Pain can be controlled to a great extent with proper medication and physiotherapy.
Myth: Once CABG is done, the disease is cured.
Fact: This surgery reduces symptoms, but does not completely cure the disease. There is a risk of re-blockage, especially in vein grafts.
Myth: Life changes after surgery, there are limitations.
Fact: Most patients can live a normal and active life as before, including working, travelling, laughing, and playing, after they have fully recovered.
Myth: there is no need to change your health habits after undergoing CABG.
Fact: surgery is part of the process, but a good lifestyle, such as exercise, a balanced diet, and stress reduction, are just as important to maintaining good health.
The heart is the most important organ in our body. Therefore, it is our responsibility to protect it. Whether it is a surgery or medication, with proper information and care at every stage, we can live a healthy and happy life again.
