Seven months after the last awards, Billboard Music Awards returned for its 2021 edition on May 23. Hosted by Nick Jonas, the awards were broadcast live from the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles. Aired on NBC, the show saw some notable performances including BTS' debut of their second English single, ‘Butter’ and Doja Cat and SZA’s opening act with their famous track ‘Kiss Me More,’ among others. We even witnessed a performance from Alicia Keys as she celebrated the 20th anniversary of her album ‘Songs in A Minor's debut, after a heartening tribute from Michelle Obama.

While this year, Pink was announced as the Icon, Drake as the Artist of the Decade and Trae Tha Truth as the Change Maker, it was The Weeknd who swept the awards with 10 wins (including the top artist). One of the biggest critics Grammys’, the singer took centre stage at the BBMAs. Last year, he called out the music awards when he didn’t receive any nomination for its 2021 show. This was even though he had the year’s biggest song ‘Blinding Lights’ and a multi-platinum, the multi-hit album ‘After Hours’. According to Billboard’s official website, however, with his recent wins, the singer is now in fifth place on the all-time BBMA winners list, behind Drake (29), Taylor Swift (25), Justin Bieber (21) and Garth Brooks (20).

While in other award shows committees determine the nominees, the Billboard Awards’ finalists are announced basis ‘key fan interactions with music, including album and digital song sales, streaming, radio airplay, and social engagement,’ which is tracked by Billboard and its data partners, including MRC Data. This year’s nominees for the 51 categories are based on a period of March 21, 2020, to April 3, 2021.
