Has your week been as long as mine? But then, there is a satisfaction of the fact that the weekend is arriving and I am excited to go back home, put on some movies (mostly comedy) and enjoy some salted butter popcorns. For me, the comedy genre is the sure-shot way to some good entertainment. While there may be some who’ll argue for or against dark comedy, satire, cringe comedy or other sub-genres, but when I consume this content it is usually to kick back and relax and it provides me just the comfort.

TBC brings you some of our all-time favourites. And even though you may have watched some or all the movies that we are suggesting, I suggest you run through them once more this week. With mayhem created by the Coronavirus pandemic, some comedy will surely be a relief.

The Hangover

This one’s from our watch list to yours. The movie is about four friends who are in Las Vegas for a bachelor party. Things go haywire when three out of four wake up in their hotel room with no memory of the previous night and their friend – the bachelor – missing! They go around the city looking for clues to find their friend and reaching his wedding on time.

It is a perfect movie to watch with friends on a Saturday evening. Even though the movie has some borderline offensive jokes and may seem a little silly, the characters make up for everything. It is gripping and engaging and leaves you wanting more. Streaming on Netflix, this bromantic comedy may even inspire you to go on a trip with your band. Or just watch the sequels (if you are interested!).

We’re the Millers

A drug dealer, a virgin, a stripper and a runaway – Millers are one of the most unusual makeshift families. Despite that, they embark on an adventure leaving us in splits. Yes, it has a very predictable plot and you (almost) always know where the characters are going with their dialogues, it still makes you laugh. This movie is perfect for Sunday afternoons.

Available on rent or purchase on YouTube you must chill this weekend with a veteran pot dealer who is travelling with the rest of the ‘Millers’ from the US to Mexico, and back! Chris Nashawaty specifically loved Jennifer Aniston. In his review for the movie, he said, “While Aniston shows that she's as deft on a stripper pole as she is with her sitcom-honed timing, Sudeikis wields his smart-ass sarcasm like a barbed weapon. And more often than not, it kills.”

IMDb rating: 7

Director: Rawson Marshall Thurber

Starring: Jason Sudeikis, Jennifer Aniston, Emma Roberts, and Will Poulter, among others.

Shaun of the dead

Horror, good, comedy, good, zombies, good! What’s to not like, right? Over the years filmmakers have been doing excellent work with combining genres and making magic. This movie is a perfect example of that. While a traditional zombie movie may not for you laughs or even smiles, this one cracks you up.

The movie (despite the genre) is full of life. The plot follows Shaun. He leads a directionless life but soon is forced into an unnerving adventure when he is caught unaware by the zombie apocalypse. In his review, Desson Thomson said that the movie is, “Wonderfully original, fast-moving and funny.”

IMDb rating: 7.9

Director: Edgar Wright

Starring: Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, Kate Ashfield, and Lucy Davis, among others.

Dumb and Dumber

This movie is a trip to comedy-Ville. It follows two silly but well-meaning friends who try to return a bag full of money to its owner, assuming that it was abandoned. In his review, Owen Gleiberman calls the movie “a frayed string of gags posing as a movie. Carrey, though, does literal-minded doofdom with peerless enthusiasm.”

So if you are up for a ton of comedy, this should be your go-to!

IMDb rating: 7.3

Director: Peter Farrelly

Starring: Jeff Daniels and Jim Carrey, among others.

The Dictator

If you love Sacha Baron Cohen, you’re going to want to watch this movie on repeat. This political satire comedy follows the dictator of a fictional country who try to evade the implementation of democracy in his country. Interestingly, the producers of the movie - Jeff Schaffer and David Mandel – revealed that the lead character was inspired by real-life dictators like Kim Jong-il, Idi Amin, Muammar Gaddafi, Mobutu Sese Seko, and Saparmurat Niyazov.

In his review, Stephen Whitty said, “For once, Baron Cohen has a real script and a supporting cast as skilled at improv as he is. And those complementary elements make a difference.” Streaming on Netflix and available on YouTube for rent or purchase, if you are okay with sharp political barbs and crass, this is movie is the to watch.

IMDb rating: 6.4
