For a considerable period, speculation has surrounded Cocktail 2, featuring Shahid Kapoor, Kriti Sanon and Rashmika Mandanna, with many believing that the film centres on a lesbian love story. The makers have now clarified that the movie does not follow such a storyline.
Not a lesbian love story
At the film’s trailer launch in Mumbai on Tuesday, the full cast and crew gathered to present the project. During the event, the lead actors, together with the director and producer, denied rumours that Rashmika and Kriti portray a romantic couple in the movie.
Producer Dinesh Vijan firmly clarified that Cocktail 2 is not a lesbian love story, while director Homi Adajania explained how the initial speculation started and gradually escalated into a widely circulated rumour.During the trailer launch, Rashmika was asked about speculation linking her and Kriti as a couple.
In response to the question, Kriti remarked that the rumours appeared to be coming from a single source and jokingly glanced at Shahid, saying, “I think the rumours are coming from just one place.” Rashmika was seen agreeing with Kriti.
To this, Shahid joked, “I didn’t say anything, guys. Why would I want it that way? I have nothing to do with that? Kaha se aa rahe hain rumours? (Where are these rumours coming from?)"
After this, director Homi Adajania clarified, “This is how the rumour started. We were all sitting on set. They do get a bit affectionate with each other because they’re friends. And we just hypothetically wondered, what if the story revolved around them and Shahid was the third wheel? I even said I wouldn’t mind making a film like that.”
Producer Dinesh Vijan explained, “We needed to clarify this, so in the trailer you see two love stories: an old romance and a new one, and then there is Luv (Ranjan). That’s all. There are no other love stories in this film.”
About Cocktail 2
On Tuesday, the creators released the film’s trailer, providing a look at the intricate relationships among Shahid Kapoor, Kriti Sanon and Rashmika Mandanna, and laying the groundwork for a relationship drama marked by love, tension and difficult decisions.
While Shahid and Rashmika’s characters appear to share a romantic connection, Kriti seems to portray his friend who gradually starts developing feelings for him. As her emotions deepen, they introduce a fresh layer of emotional tension, transforming the trio’s dynamic into a complex mix of love, friendship, and heartbreak.
Helmed by Homi Adajania, the romantic comedy is positioned as a spiritual successor to the 2012 hit Cocktail, which starred Saif Ali Khan, Deepika Padukone and Diana Penty. Over time, the original film gained cult status, particularly for its soundtrack, characters and contemporary take on relationships. However, Kriti previously clarified that the new movie is not a direct sequel but part of the same franchise, featuring an entirely different storyline and cast of characters. The film is slated to hit theatres on June 19.
