Pune: The integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology in sugarcane farming is proving to be a game-changer, significantly boosting yield and optimizing resource use. The implementation of AI has demonstrated a 40% increase in sugarcane production, while also ensuring efficient water and fertilizer usage. Additionally, it has contributed to higher sugar recovery levels, reinforcing its potential to transform the sector.
Highlighting these developments, Harshavardhan Patil, President of the National Federation of Cooperative Sugar Factories and former minister, stated, “Experiments have shown that AI can significantly improve productivity and efficiency in sugarcane farming. This technology is poised to be a revolutionary force in the sector.”
Under his leadership, directors, farmers, and officials from Karmayogi Shankarrao Patil Cooperative Sugar Factory and Neera-Bhima Cooperative Sugar Factory visited the Krishi Vigyan Kendra (Agricultural Science Center) of Agriculture Development Trust in Baramati.
The team studied the AI-driven farming models, developed in collaboration with Microsoft, Oxford University, and Baramati Agriculture Trust. They also inspected the AI-based agricultural monitoring system, or ‘war room’, which tracks and analyzes farming conditions.
Dr. Nilesh Nalawade, CEO of Krishi Vigyan Kendra, emphasized that AI-powered techniques are reshaping sugarcane farming. The technology is being made accessible to farmers through mobile applications in Marathi, ensuring wider adoption. With the help of AI, farmers are currently achieving a yield of 150 tons per acre, with an ambitious new goal of 200 tons per acre.
Adding to this, Dr. Vivek Bhoite stated that over 1,000 farmers across Maharashtra have successfully adopted AI-based sugarcane farming techniques. Importantly, the cost of implementing AI for two acres is only ₹12,500, making it an affordable and practical solution for farmers.
During the visit, Tushar Jadhav and Dheeraj Shinde from the Agriculture Development Trust provided farmers with detailed insights and guidance on AI-driven farming practices. The event was also attended by Lalasaheb Pawar, Chairman of Neera-Bhima Sugar Factory, along with directors from both factories, agricultural department officials, and local farmers.
