Pune: The increasing traffic congestion and parking difficulties in Pune are pushing more commuters toward cab services, making them the preferred mode of transportation over traditional options like auto-rickshaws.
Over the past two years, the cab industry in Pune has grown significantly, with the number of service providers increasing from just two to 18 companies. Currently, over 60,000 cabs operate in the city, catering to a rapidly expanding customer base.
Daily cab ridership in Pune has now crossed 5 lakh, while in Pimpri-Chinchwad, the number stands at 1.5 lakh. Last year, the daily ridership in Pune was approximately 4 lakh, showcasing a substantial increase in demand.
Cost Advantage: Cabs Cheaper Than Auto-Rickshaws
Despite the availability of other public transport options, many commuters find cabs more convenient and cost-effective. While auto-rickshaws charge ₹17 per kilometer, cabs generally cost ₹9 to ₹10 per kilometer, making them a more affordable choice. However, fares surge during peak hours or rainy weather. Due to intense competition among cab companies, normal fares remain between ₹9 and ₹10 per kilometer.
Why Cab Usage is Increasing
Lower fares compared to auto-rickshaws
Traffic congestion discouraging personal vehicle use
Severe parking issues in the city
Rise in employment opportunities in the cab sector
Auto-rickshaw drivers shifting to cab services
Passenger Benefits
More affordable travel compared to auto-rickshaws
No worries about parking
Easy cab availability through mobile apps
Increased competition providing more travel options
According to Dr. Keshav Kshirsagar, President of the Indian Gig Workers Forum, Pune, the affordability of cabs is a major factor driving commuter preference. He stated, “With the rise in demand, the number of cab service providers has also increased. Additionally, traffic congestion is pushing people to opt for cabs over other transport options.”
Meanwhile, the cab industry is creating large-scale employment, with a growing number of migrant drivers joining the sector. Varsha Shinde-Patil, President of Maasaheb Cab Organization, emphasized the need for strict enforcement of official cab fare regulations set by the Regional Transport Authority (RTA).
