Official data shows that Canada expelled 3,323 Indian citizens in the first half of 2026, a pace that is likely to exceed the record number of deportations registered over the past six years.
According to figures from the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA), the number of Indians deported from Canada in the first six months of this year has already climbed to nearly 88 per cent of the 3,779 people removed during all of 2025, which was itself a record high.
This move follows Canada’s efforts to reinforce its immigration framework while cutting down the number of temporary residents, such as international students and temporary foreign workers.
Canada frequently removes Indian nationals from the country, mainly for violations of immigration regulations, denial of asylum or refugee applications, overstaying visas, and involvement in visa-related fraud schemes.
During the first half of 2026, Indian nationals were the most deported group from Canada, surpassing Mexicans, with a total of 1,573 removals.
Over the past five years, Mexico has consistently been the leading nationality among those deported from Canada, while India has held the second position during the same timeframe.
The CBSA maintains a separate database on reasons for deportation, but that does not have a country-wise breakdown.
Indians also represented the largest group within Canada's 'removal in progress inventory,' with 7,669 individuals awaiting deportation, according to CBSA data.
Canada implements three general types of removal orders.
Under a departure order, an individual must leave Canada voluntarily within 30 days; if they do not, the order automatically converts into a deportation order.
An exclusion order prohibits a person from re-entering Canada for a set duration, typically ranging from one to five years.
A deportation order imposes a permanent ban on returning to Canada, unless the individual secures written permission from the Canadian government.
Canada’s deportation count for this year is also over two and a half times the number of Indians the United States has sent back to India. According to India’s Ministry of External Affairs, 1,273 Indian citizens were deported from the US between January 1 and July 22.
