Pune: In a pioneering move to enhance passenger experience, Indian Railways has introduced Artificial Intelligence (AI) to maintain high-quality bedding sets (linen) in air-conditioned coaches. This first-ever AI-driven system, implemented at the Boot Laundry in Pune’s Ghorpadi area, ensures that passengers receive clean blankets, bed sheets, and pillows on their train journeys.
For years, passengers have raised concerns about receiving unclean linen. Many travelers often had to request replacements, and inconsistent quality standards led to frequent complaints. However, the introduction of AI-based quality checks has transformed the process, ensuring better hygiene and comfort.
How AI is Enhancing Linen Quality?
AI cameras scan washed bed sheets and pillows before drying.
If any item is found unclean, an automated alert is generated, and the fabric is sent back for another wash.
Only thoroughly cleaned linen is allowed to leave the laundry, ensuring passengers receive hygienic bedding.
Speaking about the impact of this initiative, Padmasinh Jadhav, Additional Divisional Railway Manager (Pune), stated: "We are using AI in our laundry facilities for the first time, and the results are impressive. Passenger complaints about unclean linen have significantly reduced."
Inside Pune’s AI-Powered Railway Laundry
20,000 blankets, bed sheets, and pillows are washed daily.
AI checks 6 bed sheets per minute.
8 tons of fabric are processed every day.
15 trains departing from Pune are now receiving AI-checked linen.
Over 10,000 passengers benefit from cleaner bedding daily.
Before AI integration, Pune’s railway division received approximately 150 daily complaints from passengers, with major issues being:
Dirty bedding
Unhygienic coach conditions
Lack of water in restrooms
Since the AI-powered system has been implemented, complaints about linen quality have dropped by 10%, indicating a notable improvement in passenger satisfaction.
