Pune: A senior doctor from B. J. Medical College and Sassoon General Hospital has come under scrutiny for allegedly running a private practice while holding a government position. Following a formal complaint, an internal inquiry committee was set up, and its findings have now been submitted to the Department of Medical Education for further action.
The complaint, filed on November 12, 2023, by a lawyer and RTI activist, alleged that the doctor was charging ₹2,000 per consultation and was actively involved in private medical practice at multiple locations. Evidence was submitted indicating that the doctor had been seeing patients at a private clinic in Pimpri-Chinchwad, a private hospital, and other locations.
In response to the complaint, Dean Dr. Eknath Pawar promptly formed a three-member inquiry committee on November 18 to investigate the allegations.
The committee comprised:
Dr. Sanjeevani Ambekar (Chairperson) – Head of the Ophthalmology Department
Dr. Rahul Telang – Head of the ENT Department
Dr. Padmasen Ranbagale – Associate Professor, Surgery Department
The complainant and witness, Rishabh Talora, also provided statements during the investigation. After reviewing all evidence, the committee submitted its report to Dr. Pawar, who has now forwarded it to the Commissioner of Medical Education. The report recommends disciplinary action, and a final decision will be taken at the departmental level.
Concerns Over Government Doctors Practicing Privately
The case raises serious ethical concerns regarding government doctors engaging in private medical practice, which can directly impact public healthcare services.
The complainant noted that such practices lead to:
Delayed hospital attendance by doctors
Early departures from government hospitals
Irregular work schedules, affecting patient care
Misuse of government resources
Loss of public trust in the healthcare system
