Pune: In a tragic accident in Wagholi, a speeding dumper ran over nine people sleeping on the pavement late Sunday (December 22) night, leaving three dead and several critically injured.
Among the injured was Janaki Pawar, whose diaphragm was ruptured, causing her intestines to shift into her chest. She underwent a life-saving four-hour surgery at Sassoon Hospital, where doctors successfully stabilized her condition.
Janaki was brought to the hospital in a critical state around 3 a.m. Doctors diagnosed her with severe injuries, including a ruptured diaphragm. "Her intestines had shifted into her chest cavity, necessitating emergency surgery. The operation involved repositioning the intestines and stitching the diaphragm," said Dr. Lata Bhoir, who led the surgical team.
Dr. Bhoir confirmed that no other organs were damaged. "She is stable but remains on ventilator support in the ICU. Full recovery will require at least 15 days of hospitalization," she added.
CMO Intervenes for Timely Medical Aid
Following the accident, the Chief Minister's Office (CMO) contacted Sassoon Hospital's Dean, Dr. Eknath Pawar, instructing prompt medical attention for all victims. The CMO assured the hospital of immediate support for any additional resources required to treat the injured.
The accident occurred on Nagar Road near Wagholi when a dumper, driven at high speed, veered onto the pavement and crushed nine people sleeping there. The driver, Gajanan Shankar Totre, was arrested by Wagholi police. Totre was found to be under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident.
The victims, including the complainant Bhosale and his family, are daily wage laborers who had been sleeping on the open ground near Wagholi police station.
The speeding dumper ran onto the pavement, fatally injuring three people who were pronounced dead before receiving treatment. The remaining six were rushed to Sassoon Hospital, where they are undergoing treatment.
