Pune: In a major crackdown ahead of New Year's celebrations, the State Excise Department seized liquor worth ₹1.2 crore smuggled from Goa. The operation resulted in the confiscation of 1,668 liquor bottles and the arrest of nine individuals. Raids were conducted in Nigdi and Nasrapur, targeting illegal liquor distribution networks.
According to Superintendent Charansingh Rajput of the State Excise Department, smuggled liquor from Goa and Kerala is often distributed illegally during festive seasons. Acting on a tip-off, special teams were formed to track and intercept the smuggling operations.
The first raid occurred at a private bus stand in Nigdi, where liquor bottles were being transported in a private passenger bus. The bus driver and his assistant were arrested, and the confiscated liquor was valued at ₹68.37 lakh. Investigations revealed that the stock was intended for sale in the Khadki area.
Based on this information, a follow-up raid in Khadki led to the arrest of five individuals and the seizure of additional contraband. Meanwhile, a separate operation was conducted on the Pune-Satara Highway in Nasrapur.
A warehouse was raided, uncovering a hidden liquor stockpile worth ₹51.95 lakh. Four suspects were taken into custody during this operation.
Deputy Superintendent Sujit Patil and Santosh Jagdale, who were also present at the briefing, emphasized the department’s commitment to preventing illegal liquor distribution during the New Year season. Special teams continue to be deployed across the region to curb smuggling activities.
