On Sunday, July 12, 2026, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) urged consumers to take an active role in safeguarding food safety by using its mobile application to report incidents of food adulteration, unsanitary practices, deceptive labeling, or any other food safety issues.

The app enables consumers to file complaints swiftly when they encounter unsafe or low-quality food products. Users can report concerns such as adulterated items, the sale of expired goods, unhygienic conditions at food outlets, misleading or incorrect labels, and breaches of food safety regulations. They can also attach photos and provide location information to substantiate their reports.

FSSAI steps up food safety drive

The FSSAI, a statutory body under the administration of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, regulates the manufacture, storage, distribution, sale, and import of food items and also establishes food standards, has been active recently. The FSSAI recently warned against using newspapers for packing or serving food.

The advisory comes after a recent case in Mumbai, where a vada pav seller was found wrapping food in newspapers. In response, the FSSAI and the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) initiated joint action against the vendor. The regulatory authority has also introduced a compulsory V symbol for vegan products, with a compliance deadline set for July 2027. Additionally, the FSSAI is now encouraging consumers to report unsafe food via its Food Safety Connect application.

“Don’t just observe it, report it. Unsafe food practices put everyone at risk. Transform your awareness into action with the Food Safety Connect App,” the food regulator stated in a post on X.

How the app works?

The FSSAI states that the app has been created to enhance consumer involvement in enforcing food safety standards. After a complaint is filed, it is sent to the relevant food safety authority for review and necessary measures. Users can also monitor the progress of their complaints via the application.

In addition to enabling users to lodge complaints, the Food Safety Connect app provides a range of valuable services. It allows users to verify whether a Food Business Operator (FBO) holds a valid FSSAI license or registration, access key information on food safety, and receive timely updates on important advisories issued by the authority. The app also offers educational materials designed to help consumers make better-informed decisions about the food they eat.

Swiggy Instamart notices

The call for consumers to report food safety concerns via the app follows the FSSAI issuing nine notices to Swiggy Instamart after numerous complaints about the delivery of expired, spoiled, and contaminated food items. The regulator has requested a comprehensive compliance report on the platform’s food safety measures, storage protocols, and seller verification procedures.
