Pune, 29 August 2025: An eight-month-old baby boy from Beed, who had been suffering from a serious urinary disorder since birth, has been successfully treated at Sassoon General Hospital. The child was passing urine drop by drop and later developed recurrent fever and pus in the urine, prompting his parents to seek medical help in Pune.
Doctors from the Pediatric Surgery Department at Sassoon found that the baby was born with a rare condition called Posterior Urethral Valve (PUV), a congenital defect seen only in boys, affecting one in 5,000 births. The disorder creates a flap-like obstruction in the urinary tract, which can damage the kidneys if untreated. In this case, the obstruction had already begun to harm the child’s left kidney and increase his blood pressure.
The medical team first controlled the urinary infection with antibiotics and managed the child’s high blood pressure. After stabilizing his condition, surgeons performed a cystoscopy with laser technology to remove the blockage in the urinary passage. This procedure allowed the baby to urinate normally without any external incision.
Dr. Meenakshi Nalbale-Bhosale, head of pediatric surgery, said the use of Holmium Laser equipment has greatly improved the hospital’s ability to handle complex pediatric surgeries in a safe and minimally invasive manner. The machine was provided by Rotary Club of Pune Heritage.
Sassoon Hospital Dean Dr. Eknath Pawar added that the pediatric surgery department is now equipped to carry out advanced operations for children, thanks to the availability of modern laser technology.
