Pune, 30 August 2025: Pune’s COEP Technological University is preparing for an academic exchange program with IIT Bombay, supported by the Maharashtra government.
Higher and Technical Education Minister Chandrakant Patil said that while Pune is unlikely to get a new IIT due to Mumbai already hosting one, the state is working to ensure IIT Bombay’s expertise helps COEP expand its research capacity at the new Chikhali campus.
Speaking at COEP’s second convocation, Patil explained that discussions are underway with IIT Bombay Director Dr. Shirish Kedare to launch joint programs and research initiatives. He stressed that India must move beyond paying royalties on foreign patents and instead focus on creating innovations that the world will license from Indian institutions.
During the ceremony, COEP also highlighted its growth plans. Vice-Chancellor Dr. Sunil Bhirud announced that the university has set up its first chair professorship in Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning.
He added that over ₹2 crore in funds have been raised from alumni for scholarships, awards, and international outreach. Plans are also in place for a new central library, expanded computer engineering facilities, and increased student intake.
Guest speakers encouraged students to contribute to India’s progress through creativity, innovation, and honesty, with a vision for “Developed India 2047.”
At the event, 358 postgraduate (271 M.Tech and 87 MBA) and 725 undergraduate students received their degrees. Seventeen postgraduates were awarded rank certificates, and nine undergraduates received gold medals.
