Pune: MLA Shankar Mandekar of the Bhor Assembly Constituency has urged PMPML (Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited) to resume its bus service from Katraj to Torna Fort (Velhe). In a written appeal submitted on Friday, January 10, Mandekar emphasized the growing demand for efficient public transportation in the region.

In his letter to PMPML, Mandekar explained that Velhe Budruk, the taluka headquarters, had a recorded population of 2,420 in the 2011 Census. However, the population has since seen rapid growth, and the area has expanded significantly. The lack of a direct bus service has left the residents with inadequate public transport options.

A significant number of people from Velhe and nearby areas travel daily to Pune city and other regions for employment, business, education, healthcare, and agricultural markets. Previously, PMPML operated a bus service to Velhe, but it was discontinued, leaving the residents dependent on fragmented and inconvenient travel options.

“The absence of a direct bus service has caused increased mental stress and various challenges for residents who rely on public transportation for their daily needs,” Mandekar stated in his letter.

Proposed Benefits of the Service

Mandekar further outlined the benefits of reinstating the bus service:

  • Students: Easier access to higher education institutions in Pune.

  • Professionals: Improved connectivity for young professionals working in Pune city and Khed Shivapur’s industrial estates.

  • Tourism: Enhanced accessibility for tourists visiting attractions like Torna Fort, Rajgad, Madhe Ghat, and Gunjavni Dam, boosting local tourism.

  • Farmers: Greater ease for farmers transporting goods to Pune’s markets.

Bhor MLA Shankar Mandekar expressed hope that restarting the bus service would significantly alleviate transportation difficulties faced by residents and contribute to the overall development of Velhe taluka.
