Kharadi Fire Triggers RTO Action: Over 1,500 School Vans Inspected

In the past 11 months, RTO inspected 1,500 school vans, identifying 601 vehicles with compliance issues. A total of ₹21.79 lakh in fines was collected from these vehicles.

Pune: The Pune Regional Transport Office (RTO) has stepped up inspections of school vans and buses across the city and suburban areas after a school van caught fire in Kharadi.

The incident, though concerning, revealed that the affected vehicle’s documentation, including a fitness certificate valid until August 2025 and a PUC certificate valid until 2027, was up-to-date. Investigations are ongoing to ascertain the cause of the fire.

The RTO has increased the number of inspection teams to ensure the safety of schoolchildren.

Regional Transport Officer Swapnil Bhosale stated that regular inspections were already in place but have now been intensified following the incident. Teams are conducting thorough checks on all school vans and buses operating in Pune and its surrounding areas.

In the past 11 months, the RTO inspected 1,500 school vans, identifying 601 vehicles with compliance issues. A total of ₹21.79 lakh in fines was collected from these vehicles. Additionally, four school vans were penalized directly by the court for serious violations.
