Pune, 27 August 2025: A tragic case at Pune’s Sahyadri Hospital has led to the death of both a liver transplant patient and his donor wife, prompting the state health department to launch a high-level inquiry. The decision comes after allegations of negligence against the hospital.
The patient, Bapu Komkar, died on August 15 following the transplant, while his wife and donor, Kamini, passed away a week later on August 22. Relatives accused the hospital of mishandling the procedure and raised concerns about post-surgery care.
In response, the Directorate of Health Services held a meeting under Director Dr. Nitin Ambadekar and decided to form a special inquiry committee. The panel has been given four weeks to submit its findings. Until then, all liver transplant surgeries at Sahyadri Hospital have been suspended
Health officials noted that the hospital failed to inform authorities immediately about the deaths, despite being required to do so. Notices have been issued both by the state health department and the Pune Municipal Corporation, seeking clarification from the hospital.
Sahyadri Hospital, meanwhile, stated that it has received the notice and is cooperating with the inquiry. The hospital added that as part of this process, it has temporarily paused liver transplants but assured that all other medical services and surgeries remain unaffected.
