Pune, 25 August 2025: A tragic incident unfolded at Sahyadri Hospital in Deccan, Pune, where a husband and wife both lost their lives following a liver transplant procedure.
Bapu Balkrishna Komkar (48) from Hadapsar was diagnosed with end-stage liver cirrhosis. With no other option left, his wife Kamini (42) volunteered to donate part of her liver. The surgery was performed on August 15, when doctors transplanted a portion of Kamini’s liver into Bapu. However, within hours of the operation, Bapu suffered complications and died.
Although Kamini had no prior health problems, her condition worsened during treatment. On the sixth day after the surgery, she too passed away.
Family members have accused the hospital of negligence. Kamini’s brother, Balraj Wade, said that doctors had assured them the risk for her was only around five percent. He alleged that the couple’s deaths were due to mishandling and added that the family plans to file a police complaint.
The Komkars belonged to a modest background, Bapu worked in a private factory while Kamini was a homemaker. To cover the cost of the transplant, they had even mortgaged their house.
In response, Sahyadri Hospital expressed condolences to the family and maintained that the surgery was conducted as per medical protocols. The hospital stated that Bapu, as a recipient, was a high-risk patient and died due to cardiogenic shock after the transplant. Kamini, whose recovery initially appeared stable, later suffered a sudden drop in blood pressure leading to multiple organ failure and death.
