Pune, 30th July 2026: In a major step to improve children's nutrition and health, the Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has prohibited the sale, advertisement and free distribution of junk food within 50 metres of schools across the state.
Food Safety Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe issued the statewide order on Wednesday as part of the government's drive to ensure that every school-going child has access to safe and nutritious food.
The directive applies to all government, aided, private, residential and schools affiliated with the State Board, CBSE, ICSE and other educational boards.
Under the new rules, school canteens, tuck shops and mid-day meal centres must obtain mandatory registration or licences from the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI). Schools have also been directed to display food safety information boards and appoint a nodal officer to oversee compliance with food safety norms.
The order also mandates safe drinking water, proper sanitation and scientific waste management on school premises. Food safety inspections and food sample collection will be conducted at least twice every year.
The ban covers chips, soft drinks, fried snacks and other food items high in salt, sugar and fat within the restricted 50-metre zone around schools. Authorities have encouraged schools to promote healthier alternatives such as fruits, vegetables, pulses, milk and locally prepared nutritious food under the 'Eat Right School' initiative.
The FDA said 4,919 teachers from 3,567 schools across Maharashtra have already been trained under the campaign, while local self-government bodies and the education department have been asked to actively support its implementation.
Schools, vendors and food suppliers violating the new regulations may face strict action, including suspension or cancellation of licences and criminal proceedings under the Food Safety and Standards Act.
