Pune, 18 August 2025: After weeks of subdued monsoon activity, rain finally returned to Pune on Monday with steady showers from the morning. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted that the city will continue to experience cloudy skies and light to moderate rainfall over the next two to three days.

This revival comes after July recorded one of the lowest rainfall levels in four years, followed by a dry spell in early August. According to IMD data, Pune district usually receives an average of 179 millimetres of rain between August 1 and 18, but has so far recorded only 44.9 millimetres.

The renewed monsoon activity is linked to a low-pressure system over Vidarbha moving northwest and another system forming near the Odisha coast. An offshore trough extending from south Konkan to north Kerala has also strengthened conditions for widespread rainfall across the state.

With these systems in play, the IMD has issued red and orange alerts for heavy to very heavy rainfall in parts of Maharashtra, including Pune’s ghat areas, Raigad, Ratnagiri, Palghar, Thane, Sindhudurg, Satara, and Kolhapur. Officials have advised caution while traveling to these regions over the next three days.
