Pune: A pub in Mundhwa area, High Spirits Cafe, has courted controversy by including condoms and ORS packets in the gift bags sent along with invitations for its New Year’s party.
The move has triggered outrage, with the Maharashtra Pradesh Youth Congress (Media Wing) President, Akshay Jain, filing a formal complaint with the Police Commissioner.
In his complaint, Jain stated that such actions are not in keeping with Pune’s reputation as an educational and cultural hub. “By distributing items like condoms and ORS packets, the cafe has sent a wrong message to the youth, which could lead to social misunderstandings and encourage inappropriate habits. We demand strict action against the café’s management,” Jain said.
Responding to the controversy, the cafe management explained that the items were part of their “Safety and Celebration” theme for 2025. “Our gift bags included essentials for the party, such as confetti bombs, noise-making devices, electrolyte packets, condoms, and a driver service contact number to prevent drunk driving. The inclusion of condoms was a step toward promoting safe and responsible behavior, aligned with the National AIDS Control Organization's initiatives,” the cafe clarified.
The police have initiated an inquiry into the matter and are recording statements from individuals who received the gift bags. As New Year festivities gear up, many have booked hotels, pubs, and row houses for celebrations.
Others plan to welcome the New Year in open spaces and public venues with loudspeakers. The police have issued warnings that prior permissions are mandatory for such gatherings. Unauthorized parties will face legal consequences, officials said.
