Lok Sabha on Wednesday, erupted over Rahul Gandhi's remarks targeting Amit Shah for alleged Delhi Police Action against the protestors on July 20 Chalo Sansad March organised by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), which led to the Speaker Om Birla to adjourn the house till 2:30 pm.
During the debate on the Public Examination (Prevention of Unfair Means) Amendment Bill, 2026, Gandhi alleged that Shah had "ordered police action" against students involved in the July 20 protests in Delhi.
The remarks triggered massive protest from the treasury bench, Union Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Kiren Rijiju, demanded that Gandhi to apologies to the House.
Speaker Om Birla also stepped in, calling on Gandhi to base his remarks on facts and to uphold the dignity of the House.
Rahul Gandhi also launched a sharp attack on the RSS, accusing it of influencing the education system and shaping what students are taught.
“The soul of the system has been captured by the RSS. Dharmendra Pradhan never ran the education ministry. The man and organisation that run the ministry is called the RSS.
“They (students) have to buy this nonsensical history that RSS fantasises about. Pradhan is the symbol. Your real enemy is the RSS. They are the people who want you to be andhbhakts,” Gandhi said.
Gandhi said he felt "very excited" and "reassured" by the student demonstrations over the NEET paper leak, describing them as a reflection of the voice of the youth.
Gandhi opened his speech by describing a conversation he said he had with a young student, using it to explain what he described as three types of people.
I asked her, 'What does it mean to be a student?' She answered, 'A student is someone who keeps an open mind and understands they don’t know everything.' She added that there is another type of person who is convinced they know it all, views themselves as almost godlike, and acts with arrogance.
He then said he asked her about a third category — “andhbhakts” — and claimed she responded that an andhbhakt is someone “convinced another person is God”.
“So there are three categories… I found this to be a nice framework,” Gandhi said, as BJP MPs protested loudly.
Rijiju objected to the remarks, saying Gandhi was using an objectionable expression in the House through the anecdote.
“Through a student, he is using an objectionable word. He cannot use it,” the minister said.
Gandhi responded: “But I didn’t use it for you.”
Amid the uproar, Gandhi urged the Speaker to restore order in the House so he could finish his speech. In response, Om Birla said Gandhi should either present evidence to support his claims or have sought permission before raising the issue in the House.
With no reaction from the LoP, Speaker adjourned the house till 2:30 pm. After house reconvened again, it was adjourned till tomorrow.
Before adjourning for the final time, the Lok Sabha approved the Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Amendment Bill, 2026 through a voice vote.
