Pune: State Water Resources Minister Radhakrishna Vikhe-Patil has stated that Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) must take responsibility for water recycling and wastewater treatment before any additional water allocation can be granted. He emphasized that the city must prioritize water conservation and efficient use of its current resources.
During discussions on PMC's request for an increased annual water allocation of 21 TMC, Vikhe-Patil criticized the civic body for exceeding its approved quota of 14 TMC while failing to address key issues such as recycling. He directed the Water Resources Department to issue a notice to PMC for over-utilization and announced plans to hold a Canal Committee meeting soon.
Residential Projects Receive Water While Citizens Suffer
Highlighting discrepancies, Vikhe-Patil pointed out that large residential complexes near the city limits receive uninterrupted water supply, while ordinary citizens face shortages. "This cannot continue. Municipal corporations must be held accountable under the state’s water policy," he said.
Recycling and Cost Sharing Essential for Additional Allocation
The minister urged PMC to adopt water recycling practices similar to those implemented in other cities. He also mentioned that if PMC seeks an increased non-irrigation water reservation, it must share the cost of constructing new dams, as done by Mumbai and Thane. "Recycling 30-40% of water can aid conservation and provide additional resources for agriculture," he added.
Encroachment Around Dams to Be Removed
Addressing encroachments near dams, Vikhe-Patil directed strict action against illegal structures, including hotels and farmhouses, which are polluting water sources. "Even politically backed encroachments will be removed," he warned.
