Pune: The Pune Zonal Transplant Coordination Committee (ZTCC) has reported a remarkable achievement in organ donation in 2024. With 70 deceased organ donations recorded in 2024, Pune has surpassed its previous record of 63 donations in 2018 and 2019. This milestone reflects the city’s growing commitment to saving lives through organ transplantation.
Government hospitals played a significant role in this achievement. Sassoon Hospital contributed one organ donation, while Command Hospital accounted for six. These efforts underline increasing public sector awareness and support for organ donation.
Organ Donation by Numbers
In 2024, a total of 181 organs were transplanted within the Pune zone. These included:
93 kidneys
58 livers
6 hearts
4 kidney-pancreas combinations
1 heart-lung combination
14 lungs
Citizens from various professions—such as filmmakers, journalists, medical professionals, pilots, and entrepreneurs—stepped forward this year to pledge their organs, emphasizing their dedication to societal welfare. Public campaigns and initiatives like green corridors have further bolstered awareness, enabling rapid transportation of organs to save lives.
Since its establishment, ZTCC Pune has facilitated 557 deceased organ donations over two decades, saving 1,355 lives. The committee’s efforts to innovate and enhance transplantation methods continue to benefit citizens, ensuring that critical patients receive timely help.
Dr. A.G. Huprikar, Chairman of ZTCC Pune, commended the dedication of doctors and coordinators. He highlighted their compassionate approach in counseling grieving families to donate organs, which has turned sorrow into hope for many. “Such extraordinary decisions have saved 181 lives this year alone. We express our deepest gratitude to all those involved in this life-saving mission,” he said.
