Pune, 12 September 2025: The Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) on Thursday (Sept 11) carried out a major demolition drive to clear illegal structures obstructing a planned development road in Wakad and Tathawade. A total of 43 huts spread across 38,750 square feet were removed to make way for the new 18-metre-wide, 200-metre-long road.

The stretch, part of PCMC’s approved development plan, will connect Bhumkar Chowk in Wakad to the Tathawade border. Municipal officials said the road will help ease chronic traffic congestion in this fast-growing part of Pune’s metropolitan region.

The action was led by PCMC’s encroachment and slum clearance departments with support from multiple civic teams, including engineering, urban planning, fire services, and the Maharashtra Security Force. Heavy machinery such as JCBs, dumpers, and poklaines were deployed during the operation.

Municipal Commissioner and Administrator Shekhar Singh said the demolition was necessary to implement key public projects and improve road connectivity. He added that the construction of the road will begin soon to provide smoother traffic movement in the area.
