Pune: In response to rising pollution levels and citizen complaints, the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) has introduced a series of measures aimed at promoting sustainable urban development. A ban has been imposed on construction activities during nighttime hours, from 10 PM to 7 AM, to reduce noise pollution and disturbances.
As part of its efforts to conserve water, the PCMC has made it mandatory for new housing projects to install individual water meters. Additionally, builders are required to equip homes with aerator taps, which help reduce water wastage, before handing over possession to buyers.
Eco-Friendly Initiatives in Construction
To tackle the growing construction and demolition waste, the PCMC has set up a daily processing capacity of 150 metric tons. The municipal body has also mandated that builders use at least 10% recycled materials, such as paving blocks, in their projects. Non-compliance with these regulations will result in the denial of occupancy certificates to the concerned builders.
PCMC Commissioner Shekhar Singh emphasized the importance of these measures, stating, “We are addressing citizens' concerns while also taking steps towards environmentally sustainable urban development. By focusing on water conservation, waste management, and eco-friendly practices, we aim to build a future-ready, sustainable city.”

The municipal administration's measures come in the wake of mounting citizen grievances regarding pollution and quality of life. The new guidelines aim to ensure a better living environment while promoting sustainable growth in the rapidly industrializing city.
