Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has accelerated the installation of water meters under the Equal Water Supply Scheme, completing 3,600 installations in the past month.
Initial public and political resistance has eased after PMC warned of legal action, though some citizens still oppose and have been issued notices and summons.
Both household and commercial water connections are being metered, with 50–60 teams working daily to complete installations.
Pune, 3rd September 2025: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has intensified efforts to install water meters under the Equal Water Supply Scheme, with 3,600 meters fitted in the past month alone. The drive gained momentum after earlier resistance from citizens and some political groups declined following the civic body’s stern warning of legal action.
Earlier, Additional Municipal Commissioner M. J. Pradeep Chandran had issued a circular stating that those obstructing meter installation could face charges of damaging water connections or interfering in government work. While no criminal cases have been registered so far, the water supply department has begun issuing notices and summons to citizens who continue to oppose the move.
The initiative is being carried out for both domestic and commercial water connections, with installations handled by two private contractors appointed by PMC. Around 50 to 60 teams are currently engaged in the work, each installing 5 to 6 meters per day.
PMC officials said that the campaign gained traction during Ganeshotsav, when engineers engaged with citizens directly and explained the importance of water meters. Many residents agreed to the installations after being warned of possible disconnection, though some continue to resist and are now being formally served notices.
Superintending Engineer Lalit Bendre of PMC’s water supply department said that the civic body is determined to expand water metering across the city to curb wastage and ensure fair distribution. He added that notices are being issued to those still objecting, alongside ongoing public awareness efforts.
