Pune Civic Chief Orders Detailed Report to Identify Main Reasons Behind Growing Traffic Congestion
Municipal Commissioner Naval Kishore Ram has asked for a detailed report on Pune’s worsening traffic by Sept 22.
Officials will examine potholes, encroachments, and poor repairs across key roads and junctions.
Findings will guide urgent steps to ease congestion ahead of upcoming global events.
Pune, 19 September 2025: Municipal Commissioner Naval Kishore Ram has ordered a detailed study into the reasons behind the city’s worsening traffic jams. A consolidated report identifying problem spots and key causes must be submitted by Monday (Sept 22).
Traffic in Pune has slowed dramatically, with a 10-kilometer journey now taking around 33 minutes on average. The city ranks fourth in the world for congestion, a situation that continues to frustrate commuters despite ongoing efforts by the municipal corporation and traffic police.
Departments responsible for roads, construction, encroachments, street lighting, and signage have been asked to examine 32 major roads and 22 busy junctions. They will assess issues such as potholes, uneven repairs, and poorly maintained surfaces that frequently disrupt vehicle flow.
Street vendors, hawkers, and illegal stalls occupying carriageways and footpaths remain another major hurdle. Officials admit that while occasional drives are carried out to clear such encroachments, the obstructions soon return, leaving traffic snarls unresolved.
The city is also preparing for a global cycling event in January, with about ₹145 crore earmarked for resurfacing and beautifying key cycling routes. Commissioner Ram stressed that alongside these preparations, attention must be given to other roads across Pune to restore smoother and faster travel for all commuters.
