Pune: The State Excise Department of Pune witnessed a significant increase in its crackdown operations throughout 2024, with a 54% rise in actions compared to the previous year.
The department became a focal point of attention after the Porsche accident case in Pune and subsequently launched strict enforcement measures against illegal liquor sales in various hotels and pubs.
As part of its 2024 initiatives, the department has introduced plans to combat the sale and distribution of Goa-manufactured liquor and illicit homemade liquor.
Between April and November 2023, the department conducted 2,665 raids, resulting in the seizure of liquor stock worth ₹13.15 crore, along with 312 vehicles. This year, the numbers have significantly increased, with 3,847 cases registered, 446 vehicles seized, and 3,494 arrests made.
Focused Measures:
To address the issue of repeat offenders, the state government has introduced stricter rules. Offenders found repeatedly violating liquor sale and transportation laws are now required to sign a bond of ₹1 lakh, assuring compliance with legal standards. In Pune city and district, 543 offenders have been made to sign such bonds, with four individuals detained and one offender exiled from the region.
The Excise Department has also taken punitive measures against licensed vendors failing to comply with regulatory norms, including fines and suspension of licenses. Officials have assured that these enforcement actions will continue to maintain strict control over illegal liquor sales.
Charan Singh Rajput, Superintendent, State Excise Department, Pune stated, "For the past year, the State Excise Department's officers and staff have been closely monitoring illegal liquor sales. Continuous action is being taken against offenders. Additionally, punitive measures and license suspensions are being carried out for licensed vendors failing to comply with regulations. These actions will continue in the future."
