Pune: Fish Prices Skyrocket in Ganesh Peth Market Post-Fasting Season

Pune: The Ganesh Peth fish market in Pune has witnessed a sharp rise in fish supplies and prices following the conclusion of the fasting period during the Margashirsha month. Increased supplies from the eastern and western coasts of India, as well as from Andhra Pradesh, have met the growing demand for fish.

On Sunday (January 5), the market received 20 tons of deep-sea fish, 400 kilograms of creek fish, and 1 ton of river fish. Andhra Pradesh contributed 30 tons of rohu, katla, and seelan varieties, according to local traders.

Market Trends and Prices

The surge in demand has led to higher prices for almost all fish varieties, with pomfret, prawns, and lobster topping the charts. Deep-sea fish like pomfret and prawns have seen prices ranging from ₹1,000 to ₹2,200 per kilogram depending on the size. Creek and river fish prices have also risen proportionately.

Stable Meat Prices

In contrast, chicken, mutton, and egg prices have remained stable. Whole chicken is priced at ₹220 per kilogram, while goat meat is being sold at ₹780 per kilogram. Local eggs are priced at ₹140 per dozen, whereas English eggs are slightly cheaper at ₹90 per dozen.

Demand Dynamics

The rise in fish prices is attributed to the end of the fasting season, which has significantly increased demand. The supply of fish from other states like Andhra Pradesh has helped stabilize availability but has not curbed the price surge entirely.
