Pune , 25 July 2025: Pune city experienced continuous and heavy rainfall since midnight, contributing to a sharp increase in water levels across major reservoirs supplying the city. The downpour intensified over the ghat regions, with Tamhini recording an impressive 210 mm of rainfall. This revival in monsoon activity has brought relief to the city’s water management authorities, with dams now nearing their full storage capacity.
According to the latest data, the current water storage for the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) stands at 79.78%, significantly higher than 68.14% recorded on the same day last year. Similarly, the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) reservoirs have reached 78.84%, compared to 60.84% at this time in 2024. Officials have confirmed that the current levels are already sufficient to meet PMC’s annual water needs.
In response to the heavy showers, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a nowcast warning at 10 AM on Friday, forecasting moderate to intense spells of rain in parts of Pune, Mumbai, Raigad, and Thane. The IMD has also predicted very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall in the ghat sections between Mumbai and Pune from July 25 to 27, citing the influence of an offshore trough and strong convergence of rain bands in the region.
Wind speeds are also expected to pick up, reaching 60–70 km/h, prompting advisories against trekking or travel in the Western Ghats during this period due to the risk of landslides and poor visibility.
With steady rains expected over the next few days, residents are urged to remain cautious, especially in low-lying and ghat areas, while authorities continue to monitor the situation closely.
