Pune, 11th June 2025: While there was a discussion among the activists about whether the Pune Municipal Corporation elections will be held before Diwali or after, the state government on Tuesday ordered to create four-member wards for the Pune Municipal Corporation. Therefore, the election branch of the Municipal Corporation will soon start the work of creating the draft wards.
Meanwhile, the administration clarified that since the population of Pune including the included villages is 34 lakh 81 thousand as per the 2011 population, there will be 165 corporators.
The Supreme Court has ordered that local body elections in the state be held within four months. Even after a month, the government had not yet issued a notification regarding the ward structure, and aspirants were doubting whether the elections would be held on time. Finally, the government clarified its stand on the matter.
Except for the Mumbai Municipal Corporation, elections will be held in all other municipal corporations in the state using a four-member ward system. Wards will be drawn up as per the 2011 census.
A committee will be formed under the chairmanship of the Commissioner to prepare the draft ward structure. It will include an officer with complete knowledge of the local body's area, an officer appointed for ward structure, a town planner, and a computer expert, the government has stated in the order.
This is how the ward structure will be:
The municipality will prepare a draft ward structure
Then it will be sent to the Election Commission for approval
After approval, a hearing will be held after seeking objections and suggestions
After the hearing, the final ward structure will be sent to the State Election Commission for approval
The final ward structure will be published only after approval
Guidelines for ward formation:
Starting from the north
Last ward in the south
Geographical continuity should be maintained in the ward formation
Boundary lines, major roads, lanes, rivers, streams, hills, roads, flyovers etc. should be taken into consideration
No building, chawl or house should be divided into two wards
All the land including open spaces should be in some ward or the other
Roads, streams, rivers, city survey number should be mentioned while describing the boundary
Take care that settlements are not divided in any way
It was said that there would be 42 wards and 166 corporators in Pune city, but since an even number will not be possible, the number of corporators will be reduced by one. There are 161 corporators for a population of 30 lakh in Pune city.
There will be one corporator for every lakh after that. According to 2011, the population of Pune city is 34 lakh 81 thousand 900. Therefore, there will be 165 corporators for 34 lakh. The number of wards will remain 42, the election department said.
