Pune, 5th December 2024: Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has decided to take strict action against individuals who feed pigeons with grains or other food, citing the spread of respiratory illnesses caused by the increasing pigeon population.
The Solid Waste Management Department has been authorized to impose a fine of ₹5,000 for creating public uncleanliness.
The pigeon population in Pune has grown significantly in recent years. According to reports, their feathers and droppings harbor pathogens responsible for hypersensitive pneumonia, a respiratory ailment linked to lung infections.
Key Feeding Spots Identified
Feeding pigeons has become a regular practice in many prominent city locations, including key intersections, roads, and riverbanks. Complaints have been received about sacks of grains being dumped at these spots throughout the day, leading to a rapid rise in the pigeon population.
The PMC had earlier placed warning boards in certain areas, cautioning citizens against feeding pigeons and threatening action. However, it was unclear which municipal department would oversee enforcement until now.
Dr. Rajendra Bhosale, Municipal Commissioner, stated, “Pigeons are contributing to health issues among citizens. Those feeding them will now be fined for causing public uncleanliness. This action will be carried out by the Solid Waste Management Department.”
Earlier, the fine for public uncleanliness was ₹500, but it has now been increased to ₹5,000, making feeding pigeons a costly violation.
