Pune: The rising number of dead pigs found in the Bhartinagar area of Kothrud has sparked serious health concerns among local residents. Over the past week, five to six dead pigs have been discovered daily in a drain near the Kothrud PMPML Depot.
On Thursday (February 6), another 12 dead pigs were found, bringing the total count to approximately 40. The reason behind these deaths remains unclear, and the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) is yet to determine whether they were caused by poisoning or other factors.
Despite continuous reports of dead pigs, municipal authorities have been slow in their disposal, resulting in a foul smell in the area. Residents are increasingly frustrated as they struggle with the worsening sanitation conditions. On Wednesday, the PMC removed some carcasses, but the discovery of additional dead pigs the next day has heightened concerns.
The health risks associated with these deaths are significant, particularly as Pune is already reporting cases of Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS). The fear is that improper disposal of pig carcasses could lead to further health complications.
BJP Yuva Morcha General Secretary Dushyant Mohol criticized the PMC for its negligence, stating, “The authorities are not taking the matter seriously. Despite 40 pigs being found dead, no significant action has been taken. Today, we met with Health Chief Dr. Neena Borade to file a formal complaint, and she has issued necessary directives to the administration.”
Following these concerns, PMC Health Chief Dr. Neena Borade emphasized the importance of monitoring pigs entering slaughterhouses. She directed that all pigs should undergo proper health checks before being processed. Furthermore, a detailed investigation is underway to determine why food is being dumped in the area and whether it is linked to the sudden rise in pig deaths. The post-mortem reports of the pigs are expected soon, which could provide further insights into the cause of their deaths.
Search for Owners and Additional Issues
Despite the fact that two to three families in Kothrud rear pigs, none have come forward to claim responsibility for the dead animals. The municipal staff has also made no effort to trace the owners.
