Every year, the Palkhi procession, carrying the sacred padukas (footprints) of Sant Dnyaneshwar and Sant Tukaram, embarks on a journey from Pune to Pandharpur. This centuries-old tradition draws lakhs of Warkaris-devotees who walk the route, singing abhangas and spreading a message of devotion and unity.
Given the scale and significance of the event, ensuring a safe, clean, and well-equipped route is a top priority for the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC).
On May 19, 2025, the Municipal Commissioner, accompanied by senior civic officials, undertook a detailed inspection of key stretches of the Palkhi route. The visit aimed to assess current conditions and identify areas needing immediate attention.
All potholes and damaged sections must be repaired before the procession. Special cleaning drives are to be conducted to maintain hygiene. Additional water stations and mobile toilets will be set up along the route to cater to the needs of Warkaris, especially during peak hours. Temporary medical camps and ambulances will be stationed at strategic points to provide first aid and emergency care. Designated resting spots with tents and seating arrangements will be created for pilgrims to take breaks during their journey. Improved street lighting and increased police presence will ensure the safety of devotees, especially during night halts.
The Warkari community has welcomed the commissioner’s proactive approach, expressing gratitude for the administration’s efforts to improve the pilgrimage experience. Local residents and volunteers have also pledged their support, offering food, shelter, and medical aid to the devotees.
Many Warkaris emphasized the importance of a clean and well-organized route, noting that such efforts not only honor the saints but also uphold the spirit of seva (service) that defines the pilgrimage.
The Palkhi procession is not just a religious event but a cultural phenomenon that brings together people from all walks of life. For Pune, it is an opportunity to showcase its hospitality, civic sense, and organizational capabilities.
The commissioner has instructed all departments to coordinate closely and ensure that all upgrades are completed well before the Palkhi sets out. Regular monitoring and feedback from Warkaris will guide further improvements.
