Pune, 9th August 2025: In a significant move to upgrade its infrastructure and strengthen finances, Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Ltd (PMPML) has approached the state Urban Development Department for approval to lease out its depot lands for 60 years under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model. This is double the current lease period of 30 years.

PMPML Chairman and Managing Director Pankaj Daware said the proposal is awaiting administrative clearance. The extended lease term, he explained, would give private developers more confidence to invest in large-scale redevelopment projects for the city’s bus depots.

The transport body, which has been expanding its fleet of electric and CNG buses, faces challenges due to outdated depots and limited operational income. To address these issues, PMPML had earlier identified 14–15 sites as suitable for redevelopment after a feasibility study. Originally planned for 30-year leases, the proposal has now been revised to 60 years to secure stronger investor interest and better long-term returns.

The redevelopment plan includes setting up EV charging stations, dedicated parking bays, and modern maintenance workshops, along with commercial facilities such as hotels, offices, and healthcare centres. Three depots under the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) are also part of the project.

According to Daware, converting idle assets into productive spaces will improve public transport services while generating additional income from commercial rentals. The proposal is currently under review, and PMPML will start the tender process for private developers once it is approved.
