To promote water conservation amid rising demand and scarce resources, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has decided to send official letters to housing societies across the city urging them to take proactive steps to save water. This initiative comes as part of a broader public awareness campaign aligned with the state government’s water management fortnight.

Nandakishore Jagtap, head of the water supply department, stated that while the PMC already issues notices and takes action against water wastage, this time the focus is on encouraging citizens and societies to voluntarily adopt water-saving measures. The letters will highlight practical steps societies can implement to reduce water consumption and prevent wastage.

The PMC is also pushing for mandatory rainwater harvesting and wastewater recycling in new building approvals. It discourages complete cementing of open spaces in building premises to allow rainwater percolation, aiming to replenish groundwater levels.

With increasing temperatures and population growth, Pune has seen a 10-15% rise in water demand recently. The city’s reservoirs are under pressure, and efficient water management is critical to ensure sustainable supply. The PMC’s campaign, including these letters, aims to foster community participation in conserving this precious resource.
