Pune, 11th June 2025: After a tragic incident near Mumbra railway station in Mumbai on Monday, June 9, where four passengers lost their lives and nine were seriously injured, similar concerns are being raised in the Pune railway division. Between January 2024 and May 2025, 49 people died and 109 were injured in railway-related accidents in the Pune region, highlighting a growing danger in daily train travel.
According to data from the Pune railway division, in the year 2024 alone, 107 passengers fell from moving trains. Out of these, 35 died and 72 were injured. The trend has continued in 2025 as well. In just the first five months of the year, 51 such accidents occurred, resulting in 14 deaths and 37 injuries. These numbers show that the situation is not improving.
The causes of these accidents are similar to those seen in Mumbai’s local train network. Most incidents happen due to overcrowding, standing at open doors during peak hours, and trying to board or get off moving trains. These unsafe actions are leading to avoidable tragedies.
Train travel on busy routes like Pune to Lonavala has become more stressful and risky. Overcrowding, lack of security, and heat-related issues are common problems faced by commuters. Many passengers feel unsafe and take extra precautions to protect themselves while traveling.
People are also asking for better compensation for accident victims. Right now, the amount given is very low, and some families don’t even get the promised help.
The railway administration says it is working to improve passenger safety. Campaigns are being run at stations and inside trains to raise awareness. Railway Protection Force (RPF) teams have increased their presence at stations and accident-prone spots to prevent careless behavior.
Authorities are urging people to follow safety rules and avoid dangerous actions like crossing tracks or hanging out of train doors. Passenger cooperation is essential to reduce accidents and ensure safer journeys.
