Pune: A thief who stole ₹11 lakh worth of gold and silver ornaments from a train passenger was arrested by the Pune Railway Police after an extensive investigation involving the analysis of 150 CCTV footage. The police successfully recovered ₹10.84 lakh worth of stolen jewelry, which was later returned to the victims in an official ceremony.
On January 13, Shirish Vitthalrao Shitole (73), a resident of Dewara, Madhya Pradesh, was traveling on the Indore-Daund Express. As the train neared Pune Railway Station, four individuals approached him under the pretense of helping him unload his luggage. They took his trolley bag, assisted him in getting off the train, and returned it before disappearing into the crowd.
Shortly after, Shitole noticed that the zipper of his bag was open. Upon checking, he discovered that his purse containing gold and silver ornaments worth ₹11,28,150 was missing. He promptly filed a complaint at the Railway Police Station.
The investigation team thoroughly examined CCTV footage from around 150 locations, carefully observing suspicious movements to identify the suspect. Based on the footage, police obtained images of the accused and traced him to Ghorpadi near the railway yard.
Following this lead, the police arrested Sumitkumar Satvirsingh (30), a resident of Sultanpuri Sunny Bazar Road, Delhi, originally from Jatluhari, Bhawani Kheda, Bhawani, Haryana. After interrogation, he confessed to the crime and was taken into custody on January 24.
During the investigation, police seized stolen ornaments worth ₹10,83,400, which were legally returned to the complainant after completing the necessary judicial process.
