The surgery was done with high precision using 3D imaging and robotic tools, reducing pain and speeding up recovery.
A team of orthopedic and anesthesia specialists from the hospital carried out the operation under the leadership of senior surgeon Dr. Eknath Pawar.
Pune, 4th August 2025: Sassoon General Hospital in Pune has marked a significant milestone in public healthcare by performing a successful robotic-assisted total knee replacement surgery on a 62-year-old woman. The procedure was carried out on Friday, August 1, using advanced robotic technology, which has now become available at the hospital’s orthopedics department.
The patient had been suffering from chronic knee pain for over a decade due to osteoarthritis. In recent months, her condition had worsened to the point where even walking inside her home was difficult, and she was struggling to sleep due to persistent pain. Her left knee was particularly affected. With no relief from conventional treatments, she was advised to undergo joint replacement surgery.
The operation was led by senior orthopedic surgeon Dr. Eknath Pawar, along with a team including Dr. Praveen Londhe, Dr. Pradeep Jadhav, Dr. Prafull Ingle, and Dr. Ritwik Shaw. The anesthesia team, working under the guidance of Dr. Surekha Shinde, included Dr. Vijay Patil, Dr. Tushar Sidgur, and Dr. Neha Jha.
Before the surgery, a detailed CT scan of the patient’s leg was taken. The imaging was then processed using specialized computer software to create a 3D model of the knee. This allowed the surgical team to pre-plan the size and position of the artificial joint with high accuracy. During the procedure, robotic instruments and trackers were used to assist in making precise cuts and measurements.
Using the robotic arm, surgeons were able to remove damaged bone with minimal invasion and place the artificial joint with excellent precision. The new joint fit perfectly, reducing the chances of complications and ensuring a quicker recovery.
Doctors said robotic-assisted surgery offers multiple benefits, including more accurate bone cuts, reduced pain post-surgery, minimal bleeding, and a lower risk of fat embolism. Most importantly, it helps patients recover faster with fewer complications.
This successful procedure highlights Sassoon Hospital’s growing capabilities in adopting cutting-edge medical technology for better patient outcomes.
