Pune: After weeks of unseasonal warmth, Pune has begun to experience colder weather as temperatures drop significantly. On Thursday (January 2), the minimum temperature in the city fell by 3-4°C, marking the onset of winter.
The India Meteorological Department has forecast a further dip in temperature within the next 24 hours due to cold winds from northern India.
The city’s key areas recorded varying degrees of chill, with NDA reporting a low of 11°C and Shivajinagar at 13.7°C. For the past 15 days, winter seemed to take a backseat as cloudy skies kept minimum temperatures hovering between 15°C and 23°C. Residents, however, felt a noticeable chill during the late-night and early-morning hours.
Persistent Temperature Fluctuations Over the Past Month
Pune’s weather has been marked by continuous ups and downs in minimum temperatures over the last month. November, which typically brings cooler days, was unexpectedly warm this year. December followed suit, with mild weather persisting throughout the month. During the final week of December, the city barely experienced any winter-like conditions.
Now, as January begins, colder days seem likely. However, a low-pressure system forming over the Bay of Bengal could lead to further fluctuations in temperature.
The Director General of the Meteorological Department has also predicted increased rainfall in January, which may further impact the city’s winter season. Residents are advised to brace for colder days ahead, as the chill is expected to intensify due to active cold waves from the north.
