Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML) has successfully reduced the number of bus accidents by implementing driver training, counseling, and stricter enforcement of traffic regulations. According to PMPML reports, the accident rate has decreased significantly from 11.17 per cent in 2022-23 to 4.8 per cent in 2024.
Over the years, PMPML had been facing concerns over safety due to frequent accidents, reckless driving, and incidents of theft affecting women passengers. The administration responded by introducing rigorous training and counseling programs to address these issues. The PMPML administration has also intensified actions against traffic rule violations, ensuring better discipline among drivers.
Key Measures Taken to Reduce Accidents
Structured Driver Training Program:
PMPML introduced a mandatory training module for both permanent and contractual drivers.
The Institute of Driving Training and Research (IDTR) has developed a two-day intensive training session focusing on safe driving techniques and accident prevention.
As of now, 300 drivers have successfully completed the training program.
Counseling for Stress-Free Driving:
PMPML has launched driver counseling initiatives to help drivers manage stress and navigate difficult situations on the road.
Sessions focus on maintaining composure while driving under pressure and ensuring road safety.
PMPML has taken strict action against 887 drivers in the past year for violating traffic rules. These drivers were fined a total of ₹10 lakh, and the administration has confirmed that regular monitoring and enforcement measures will continue to ensure compliance.
