Pune: In a significant crackdown, Pune traffic police have fined 877 drivers of Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML) buses a total of ₹10 lakh for violating traffic rules. These violations include overspeeding, jumping traffic signals, overtaking, and other breaches of road safety norms.

The drivers, primarily operating on PMPML’s contract buses, will have the fines deducted directly from their salaries. The PMPML administration, already struggling with frequent violations by both its staff and contractor-employed drivers, has announced additional training sessions to enforce better compliance with traffic rules.

Rising Passenger Complaints

Passenger grievances regarding PMPML drivers and conductors have increased noticeably. Complaints range from drivers talking on mobile phones while driving, stopping buses on zebra crossings, and smoking on duty to failing to update route boards, ignoring lane discipline, and jumping signals.

To address these issues, PMPML has warned drivers and conductors of strict action, including a fine of ₹1,200 for each violation. Persistent offenders may also face suspension.

Ensuring Safety

PMPML’s Deputy Managing Director, Nitin Narvekar, emphasized, “Adherence to traffic rules is crucial for ensuring the safety of our passengers. Violations will not be tolerated, and penal actions will continue to be enforced.”
