Pune, 14 August 2025: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has announced plans to install 3,500 new streetlights in newly merged villages and on recently constructed roads across the city. The initiative aims to improve safety and convenience for residents, particularly in areas that have long been without proper lighting.
For years, citizens from the 32 villages merged into PMC limits have demanded streetlights on public roads and spaces. Despite repeated requests, the issue remained unresolved until recently. Following media reports and growing pressure, PMC began the process of installing lights.
The civic body has set aside between ₹25 crore and ₹30 crore for the project. Of this, ₹18 crore will be spent on merged villages, and ₹7 crore on new roads within the main city. Financial approval for the first phase has been granted, and work is expected to finish within six months.
Apart from these locations, streetlights have also been installed along the Bopdev Ghat stretch, from the Trinity School area up to PMC limits. This comes after widespread demands from police and locals following the October 2024 incident in which a young woman was assaulted in the area. Lights for Bopdev Ghat were relocated from Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Road, where they had been set up during the G-20 summit preparations.
PMC officials said the move will help improve safety and visibility on previously dark stretches, making daily travel easier and more secure for residents.
