The names of the injured students have been made public, prompting widespread concern and a wave of support from the community. As the affected students receive medical treatment, families and student organizations are appealing to educational authorities to postpone upcoming exams, allowing the victims time to recover both physically and emotionally.
The accident occurred late Thursday evening when a car lost control near a busy intersection in Sadashiv Peth, colliding with a group of students walking home after classes. Eyewitnesses report that the vehicle was traveling at high speed, and the impact left several students with serious injuries.
Emergency services responded swiftly, transporting the injured to a nearby hospital. Doctors have confirmed that while most students are stable, some have sustained fractures and require ongoing care.
Authorities have released the names of the students admitted to the hospital following the accident:
Amit Joshi (19)
Priya Kulkarni (20)
Rahul Deshmukh (18)
Sneha Patil (19)
Vikas Pawar (21)
All five are currently under observation. Their families have expressed gratitude for the community’s support and the prompt medical attention provided.
With end-of-semester exams scheduled to begin next week, the accident has created significant anxiety among the injured students and their families. Many are unable to attend classes or prepare for exams due to their injuries and hospitalization.
Student unions and parent associations have formally requested that educational authorities grant special consideration to the victims. “These students have suffered a traumatic incident. Forcing them to appear for exams in this condition would be unfair and detrimental to their recovery,” said Sushil More, president of the Pune Student Welfare Association.
A petition signed by over 500 students has been submitted to the university and local education board, urging them to reschedule exams or provide alternative arrangements for the injured.
In response to the growing demands, officials from the Pune District Education Office have acknowledged the situation and assured families that the students’ well-being will be prioritized. “We are reviewing each case individually and will work with colleges to ensure that no student’s academic future is jeopardized due to this unfortunate accident,” said a spokesperson.
The accident has also sparked renewed calls for improved road safety measures in Sadashiv Peth and across Pune. Residents are urging authorities to implement stricter speed controls, better signage, and increased police presence near educational institutions.
Local NGOs have organized awareness drives, emphasizing the importance of pedestrian safety and responsible driving.
