Pune: The Central Railway is set to enhance safety and reduce travel time for trains traveling from Pune to Mumbai by installing speed-sensing devices at strategic locations in the Bor Ghat. These advanced devices will monitor train speeds during the steep descent, automatically applying brakes if speeds exceed the permissible limit.
Currently, trains must halt at specific points like Monkey Hill to ensure safe descent, a precaution that delays schedules by at least 10-12 minutes. The new devices will eliminate the need for these stops, ensuring a smoother and faster journey.
Current Challenges:
Trains descending the Bor Ghat face steep gradients, making it necessary for drivers to monitor and control speed manually. Any overspeeding poses a significant derailment risk, particularly during monsoon months. To mitigate this risk, the administration mandates halts at critical points.
Planned Upgrade:
The railway administration will install speed-sensing devices at two key locations in the Bor Ghat. These devices will regulate train speeds automatically, maintaining consistent movement and reducing risks. This technological upgrade is expected to significantly improve operational efficiency and passenger convenience.

Dr. Swapnil Neela, Chief Public Relations Officer, Central Railway, Mumbai stated, "To prevent trains from overspeeding while descending the ghat, the railway administration has mandated halts at multiple locations. With the implementation of these devices, halts will no longer be necessary. The system will be installed at two locations in the Bor Ghat soon."
