
Pune: The Social Welfare Department has received the funds required for distributing scholarships to students pursuing higher education, and the disbursement of pending scholarships will be completed by the end of March, announced Maharashtra’s Minister for Other Backward Classes (OBC) and Bahujan Welfare, Atul Save.
The announcement was made during the inauguration of the relocated office of the OBC Bahujan Welfare Directorate, which was presided over by Minister Save on Monday (January 27).
Following the inauguration, the minister reviewed the department's ongoing operations and inspected the new building of the Maharashtra Energy Development Agency (MahaUrja).
During his interaction with reporters, the minister assured that funds for scholarships have already been allocated and that all pending scholarships for higher education will be distributed within the stipulated timeframe.
54 Welfare Schemes for Marginalized Communities
The OBC Bahujan Welfare Department is currently implementing 54 welfare schemes aimed at uplifting marginalized communities, including Other Backward Classes, Denotified Tribes, Nomadic Tribes, and Special Backward Categories.
As part of these initiatives, officials have been instructed to conduct regular inspections of hostels and ashram schools to ensure proper attendance and adequate facilities for students.
Hostels Established Across 26 Districts
The department has been actively working to support OBC and Bahujan students. Over the past two and a half years, hostels with a capacity of 100 students each have been established in 26 districts for boys and girls. The minister emphasized the importance of strict verification of caste certificates during hostel admissions, directing officials to take legal action against cases of fraudulent certificates.
Directives for Improved Implementation
Minister Save instructed officials in districts that have not yet finalized rental accommodations for hostels to expedite the process and submit necessary proposals. He also called for prioritizing the provision of food allowances and educational materials for students and ensuring proper follow-up regarding hostel grants.
