Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML), which caters to nearly 13 lakh daily commuters, has failed to provide adequate sheltered bus stops, forcing passengers to endure extreme weather conditions.

Despite an agreement to construct 300 bus stops with shelters, only 100 have been built in nearly two years. PMPML has taken no action beyond issuing notices, leaving commuters with no relief from the scorching heat or rains.

With limited funds for infrastructure, PMPML signed a Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) agreement with Siddhi Advertisements in July 2023. The company was expected to construct 300 stainless-steel bus stops within 300 days. However, only 100 have been completed so far.

PMPML authorities admit to the delay but have not taken strict action against the advertiser. As a result, commuters are left waiting under harsh conditions.

9,000 Bus Stops Required, But Most Remain Unsheltered

The PMPML network covers Pune, Pimpri-Chinchwad, and PMRDA regions, requiring around 9,000 bus stops. However, only 1,185 of these stops have proper shelters, including 120 BRT bus stops. Lack of adequate infrastructure has created significant hardships for daily commuters, especially senior citizens, women, and children.

Major Inconveniences Faced by Commuters

  • Forced to stand in extreme heat without shade.

  • Struggles during the monsoon season due to lack of cover.

  • No seating options for senior citizens, women, and young children.

  • Parents with infants are forced to wait for long hours without shelter.

"Providing adequate shelter at bus stops is essential. We are working towards increasing the number of covered bus stops. A notice has been issued to the advertiser for incomplete work."

— Deepa Mudhol-Munde, Chairperson & Managing Director, PMPML, Pune
